"Mother died today." Three words, and you're no longer in your living room.
The first sentence isn't a beginning, it's a door. On the other side, the reader breathes the air of your world for the first time, and decides very quickly whether to stay.
Yours, in the text you're writing now: is it an open door, or a wall with a handle?
