Two people read the same novel. The first sees a love story. The second sees a story about control. They're both right, and somewhere the author, listening to them, discovers a book he didn't write.
Cortázar wanted accomplice readers, not spectator readers: "Hopscotch" can be read in two different orders, literally two books for the price of one.
You're not writing a book. You're writing one per reader. Nobody knows how many.
